The Formula

How to Calculate a Salary Hike

A salary hike (or increment) is the increase added to your existing salary. There are two everyday questions: what is my new salary after an X% hike, and what hike percentage did I actually get. Both use simple formulas.

New Salary = Current Salary + (Current Salary × Hike% / 100)
Hike % = ((New Salary − Current Salary) / Current Salary) × 100

Example: on a current salary of Rs 50,000 with a 20% hike, the increase is Rs 10,000 and the new salary is Rs 60,000. Working backwards, a rise from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 is a 20% hike.

What Is a Good Salary Hike in India?

Use this as a rule of thumb when you evaluate an offer or appraisal.

Hike RangeWhat It Usually Means
3% to 5%Cost-of-living adjustment, minimal real increase
5% to 10%Standard annual performance increment
10% to 15%Above-average performance or a small promotion
15% to 30%Promotion, role change, or a job switch
30% and aboveUsually a company switch or a big jump in responsibility
A hike on CTC is not the same as a hike in your in-hand salary
When your CTC goes up, your take-home rises by less, because higher income can push up TDS, PF and other deductions. To see the real monthly cash effect of your new salary, use our Take-Home Salary Calculator and check your HRA exemption.

Project Your Salary for the Next 5 or 10 Years

A steady annual hike compounds. A salary of Rs 50,000 growing at 10% a year becomes about Rs 80,500 in 5 years and Rs 1,29,700 in 10 years, because each year's hike is applied on top of the previous raise, not the starting salary. Tips to Negotiate a Better Hike

Know your number first. Calculate the exact new salary you want before the conversation, in both percentage and rupee terms.
Talk in-hand, not just CTC. A high CTC hike can mean a small take-home jump. Ask how the increase is split across fixed pay, allowances and variable.
Benchmark the role. Compare against the market range for your title and city, not just your own last salary.
Bundle the ask. If the cash hike is capped, negotiate joining bonus, retention pay, or faster review cycles.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my salary hike percentage?
Hike % = ((New Salary − Current Salary) / Current Salary) × 100. A rise from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 is (10,000 / 50,000) × 100 = 20%.
How do I calculate a 30% hike on my CTC?
Multiply your CTC by 30/100, then add it back. On Rs 6,00,000, a 30% hike adds Rs 1,80,000, making the new CTC Rs 7,80,000.
How do I calculate a 40% hike?
Multiply by 0.40 and add. On Rs 80,000 a 40% hike adds Rs 32,000, giving Rs 1,12,000.
Is a salary hike the same as a salary increment?
In everyday use, yes. Both mean an increase over your current salary. "Increment" often refers to the annual appraisal raise, while "hike" is also used for the jump when switching jobs.
What is a good salary hike percentage in India?
3-5% is a cost-of-living bump, 5-10% a normal increment, 10-15% above-average, 15-30% a promotion or switch, and 30%+ usually a company change.
Does a 20% hike on CTC mean 20% more in-hand?
No. CTC includes employer PF, gratuity and other costs. Your in-hand rises by less and can attract higher TDS. Use our Take-Home Salary Calculator to see the real figure.
How do I calculate hike on a monthly vs annual salary?
The percentage works the same way on monthly or annual figures. Use the Monthly / Annual toggle above to switch the labels; the maths is identical.
How will my salary grow over the next 5 years?
Annual hikes compound. Use the Multi-Year mode above to project year by year. At a 10% yearly hike, salary roughly doubles in about 7-8 years.
